Study indicates significant shale gas generation potential in Jharkhand

A recent study by the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (BSIP) has revealed significant shale gas generation potential in the eastern South Karanpura coalfield in Jharkhand.

Significance: The findings suggest that the region could contribute significantly to future energy resource development and national energy security.

About the shale gas generation

Shale gas is a type of natural gas found trapped within shale rock formations.

Formation: Shale gas is generated from organic matter (like ancient plant material) that was deposited at the bottom of ancient bodies of water.

Over millions of years, heat and pressure transformed this organic matter into shale and natural gas.

Extraction: Shale gas is extracted through a process called hydraulic fracturing or fracking. This involves injecting a mixture of water, sand, and chemicals at high pressure into the shale rock to create fractures, allowing the gas to flow out.

Global Reserves: Significant shale gas reserves have been identified in various regions, including the United States, Canada, China, and parts of Europe.

Environmental Concerns: Fracking has raised environmental concerns, including potential groundwater contamination, induced seismic activity, and methane emissions.
