Born on May 1, 1932, in Somanahalli, Mandya district, Karnataka. Studied law in the United States, earning degrees from Southern Methodist University and George Washington University.
Political Career:
Entered politics in 1962, winning a seat in the Mysore Legislative Assembly. Won the Mandya Lok Sabha seat three times (1968, 1971, and 1980). Served as Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from 1989 to 1993.
Became the 10th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1999 to 2004. Held the position of Union External Affairs Minister from 2009 to 2012. Served as the 19th Governor of Maharashtra from 2004 to 2008.
