S M Krishna cremated with state honours

S.M. Krishna, the former Chief Minister of Karnataka and former External Affairs Minister, was cremated with full state honours on December 11, 2024.

About S.M. Krishna S.M. Krishna was a prominent Indian politician who served in various high-profile roles throughout his career. Awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2023, the second highest civilian award in India.

Early Life and Education: 

 Born on May 1, 1932, in Somanahalli, Mandya district, Karnataka. Studied law in the United States, earning degrees from Southern Methodist University and George Washington University.

Political Career:

 Entered politics in 1962, winning a seat in the Mysore Legislative Assembly. Won the Mandya Lok Sabha seat three times (1968, 1971, and 1980). Served as Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from 1989 to 1993.

Became the 10th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1999 to 2004. Held the position of Union External Affairs Minister from 2009 to 2012. Served as the 19th Governor of Maharashtra from 2004 to 2008.

 Focused on transforming Bengaluru into a global IT hub, earning it the title "Silicon Valley of India". Attracted numerous IT/BT companies and foreign direct investments.

Development of North Karnataka: 

 Set up a committee led by economist Dr. D. M. Nanjundappa to address regional imbalances and promote systematic development in the backward regions of North Karnataka.
