Padma Shri awardee Tulasi Gowda passed away

Tulasi Gowda, fondly known as the "Tree Mother", passed away on December 16, 2024, at the age of 86. She was a renowned environmentalist from the Halakki tribal community in Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka.

Early Life: Born in Honnalli village, Ankola Taluk. Developed a deep connection with nature from a young age.

Environmental Contributions: Planted and nurtured over 30,000 tree saplings in her lifetime. Worked at the Mattighatta Forest Nursery and continued her efforts even after retirement

Known for her extensive knowledge of plants, trees, and their care requirements. Recognition and Awards: Conferred the Padma Shri in 2021 by then President Ram Nath Kovind.

Received an honorary doctorate from the University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad. Awarded the Indira Priyadarshini Vriksha Mitra and Vrikshamitra awards.

About the Halakki tribal community The Halakki tribal community is an indigenous tribe predominantly found in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka.

Geographical Location: Primarily reside in the Western Ghats region, especially in areas like Ankola, Honnavara, Kumta, and Gokarna. Known as the "Aboriginals of Uttara Kannada".

Cultural Heritage: Distinct Attire: Women adorn themselves with heavy jewelry, including beads, necklaces, and nose rings. Traditional Dress: Women wear sarees without blouses, and men wear traditional attire.

Language: Speak a dialect of Kannada called Achchagannada. Social Structure: Community Living: Live in small hamlets called Koppas, with each Koppa led by a Gowda.
