NATO is establishing a Northern Land Command in Finland

NATO is establishing a Northern Land Command in Eastern Finland, near the Russian border.

Location: The command will be based in Mikkeli, which is about two hours' drive from the Finnish-Russian border.

Purpose: The new command will lead NATO's land force operations in northern Europe in the event of a military conflict.

Background: Finland joined NATO in 2023, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Operation: The command will operate under NATO's U.S.-based Norfolk Joint Force Command and will work jointly with Finland's own land force command. Budget and Staff: The unit will have an annual budget of 8.5 million euros ($9.5 million) and will consist of a few dozen international officials.

New Members: Finland and Sweden joined NATO in 2023 and 2024, respectively. Increased Presence: NATO has increased its presence in Eastern Europe, particularly in response to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
