There has been a demand for granting 371 (J)-like status to the Kittur Karnataka region.
Government Response: The government has acknowledged the demands and is considering the feasibility of extending similar provisions to Kittur Karnataka.
Background: Article 371 (J): Provides special provisions for the Kalyana Karnataka region (formerly Hyderabad-Karnataka), including reservations in education and employment.
Constitutional Amendment: Inserted by the 98th Constitutional Amendment Act of 2012. Region Covered: Includes the six backward districts of Northern Karnataka: Kalaburagi, Bidar, Raichur, Koppal, Yadgir, and Bellary.
Purpose: To address the developmental disparities and provide equitable opportunities and facilities for the people of the Kalyana -Karnataka region.
Special Provisions: Development Board: Establishment of a separate development board for the Kalyana -Karnataka region. Annual Report: The board's report is placed before the State Legislative Assembly annually.
Equitable Allocation: Equitable allocation of funds for developmental expenditure over the region. Educational and Vocational Training: Reservation of seats in educational and vocational training institutions for students from the region.
Public Employment: Reservation of posts in state government and state-controlled organizations for persons from the region.
