MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small, single-stranded RNA molecules that help cells regulate gene expression.

2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their discovery of microRNA and its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation.

Significance: Their groundbreaking discovery revealed a completely new principle of gene regulation that is essential for multicellular organisms, including humans.

About the Nobel Prize The Nobel Prize is a set of prestigious international awards given annually in several categories, including Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature, Peace, and Economics.

History: Founded by Alfred Nobel in 1895, the Nobel Prizes were first awarded in 1901.

Selection Process: Each prize is awarded by different organizations, such as the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for Physics and Chemistry, the Karolinska Institute for Medicine, the Swedish Academy for Literature, and the Norwegian Nobel Committee for Peace.

Prize Money: Each laureate receives a sum of 11 million Swedish crowns (approximately $1.1 million). Purpose: The prizes recognize outstanding contributions to humanity in various fields, aiming to promote progress and peace.

Award Ceremony: The awards, except for the Peace Prize, are presented in Stockholm, Sweden on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death. The Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony is held in Oslo, Norway.
