Japan, India startups collaborate to tackle space debris

Japanese and Indian space startups have teamed up to tackle the growing problem of space debris. Partners: Tokyo-based Orbital Lasers: A spin-off from SKY Perfect JSAT, developing laser technology to stop the rotation of space debris.

Indian Robotics Company InspeCity: Founded in 2022, specializing in satellite life extension and reducing space debris.

Objective: Laser-Equipped Satellites: The collaboration aims to use laser-equipped satellites to remove debris from orbit. In-Space Services: Potential services include de-orbiting defunct satellites and extending spacecraft lifespans.

Technological Approach: Laser Technology: Orbital Lasers' system uses laser energy to vaporize small parts of space debris, making it easier for servicing spacecraft to capture and remove the debris. Demonstration: The system is set to be demonstrated in space by 2027.

Previous Collaborations: Japan and India have worked together on the joint Lunar Polar Exploration (LUPEX) mission, which could launch as early as 2026.
