J&K Cabinet passes resolution for statehood

The Jammu and Kashmir Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, has passed a resolution seeking the restoration of statehood to the region.

Resolution: The resolution was unanimously adopted during the first cabinet meeting held on October 17, 2024.

Objective: The resolution urges the Union Government to restore Jammu and Kashmir's statehood "in its original form".

Background: Jammu and Kashmir lost its special status and was reorganized into two Union Territories, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh, following the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.

About the Article 370

Article 370 of the Indian Constitution was a temporary provision that granted special autonomy to the region of Jammu and Kashmir.

Autonomy: Under Article 370, Jammu and Kashmir had its own constitution, a separate flag, and autonomy over internal matters except for defense, communications, and foreign affairs.

Abrogation: On August 5, 2019, the Indian government abrogated Article 370, revoking the special status of Jammu and Kashmir.
