International Cheetah Day is observed annually on December 4
This day was established by the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) to honor the memory of a cheetah cub named Khayam, who was raised by Dr. Laurie Marker, the founder of CCF.
About Cheetah The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is a remarkable and unique big cat known for its incredible speed and agility.
Characteristics: Speed:
The cheetah is the fastest land animal, capable of reaching speeds up to 70 mph (112 km/h) in short bursts covering distances up to 500 meters.
Body Adaptations:
Cheetahs have a lightweight build, long legs, and a large nasal passage for efficient oxygen intake. Their semi-retractable claws provide excellent traction, while their long tail helps with balance and steering during high-speed chases.
Habitat:
Cheetahs are found in various habitats, including grasslands, savannas, and open plains, primarily in Africa. A small population also exists in Iran (the Asiatic cheetah).
Conservation Status: Threats: Cheetahs face threats like habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, poaching, and the illegal wildlife trade.
