•India’s first privately-led helicopter manufacturing unit is set to be established in Kolar, Karnataka, through a partnership between Tata Advanced Systems (TASL) and Airbus.
•The facility will manufacture Airbus’ best-selling H125 helicopter, marking a significant milestone in India’s aerospace sector.
1. Overview of the Project
• The Final Assembly Line (FAL) for H125 helicopters will be set up in Vemgal Industrial Area, Kolar, approximately two hours from Bengaluru.
• The facility will be the fourth such installation globally, after France, the US, and Brazil.
•The facility will also include Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) services, ensuring long-term sustainability.
3. Strategic Importance Boost to Indigenous Aerospace Manufacturing:
•Strengthens India’s self-reliance in aviation technology.
•Employment & Skill Development:
Creates high-value jobs and attracts supply chain investments.
•Regional Advantage:
Karnataka was chosen over Anantapur (AP), Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh due to its strong aerospace ecosystem.
About H125 helicopter
•The Airbus H125 is a single-engine light utility helicopter, known for its versatility, high-altitude performance, and reliability.
•It is part of the Ecureuil (Squirrel) family, with over 7,200 units delivered worldwide.
•Capacity: Can carry 1 pilot + up to 6 passengers or 2 pilots + up to 4 passengers.
•Speed & Range:
–Fast cruise speed: ~220 km/h.
–Range: ~630 km.
–Endurance: ~4 hours.
2. Performance & Applications
•High-altitude capability: Holds the world record for the highest-altitude landing on Mount Everest (8,848m).
