Hassan city Municipal Council upgraded to City Corporation

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced that the Hassan City Municipal Council has been upgraded to a City Corporation.

Key Highlights: 

Infrastructure Improvement: The upgrade aims to enhance infrastructure facilities in Hassan, promoting better urban development. 

Governance: With this upgrade, Hassan will now have a Mayor instead of a City Municipal Council (CMC) president.

Development Projects: The government plans to complete the Hassan Airport project and develop a park near the Hemavathi Dam, similar to the Brindavan Gardens at KRS.

About Municipal Council and City Corporation Municipal Council: 

Definition: A municipal council is a local government body that administers a city, town, or district. 

Structure: Typically consists of elected representatives, including a president.

Functions: Responsible for providing basic civic amenities like water supply, sanitation, road maintenance, and primary education. 

Budget: Generally, has a smaller budget compared to a city corporation, focusing on smaller towns and rural areas.

Leadership: Headed by a president, with various committees handling different functions.

City Corporation: 

Definition: A city corporation is a municipal body that governs larger urban areas with significant populations and infrastructure. 

Structure: Comprises elected representatives, including a mayor and a deputy mayor.

Functions: Manages extensive urban planning, infrastructure development, public health, and education. Responsible for complex urban issues like traffic management, waste disposal, and economic development.

Budget: Has a larger budget, enabling it to undertake major development projects and provide advanced civic services. 

Leadership: Headed by a mayor, who has greater executive powers compared to a municipal council president.
