HAL becomes 14th Maharatna company in India

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has been upgraded to Maharatna status, becoming the 14th Maharatna company in India.

Upgrade Date: October 1, 2024.

Criteria: HAL met the criteria for Maharatna status, including having an annual turnover of over ₹20,000 crore over the last three years.

Benefits: Maharatna status provides HAL with greater operational autonomy and financial powers, allowing it to make significant investments without government approval.

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited

•Established on December 23, 1940, as Hindustan Aircraft Limited in Bangalore by visionary Walchand Hirachand, the company aimed to manufacture aircraft domestically.
•The Government of India became a shareholder in 1941, assuming full management control in 1942.
•In 1964, Hindustan Aircraft Limited amalgamated with Aeronautics India Limited and it was named “Hindustan Aeronautics Limited”
•HAL’s developments, like Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) namely Tejas and Light
•Utility Helicopter (LUH), are central to modernizing the Indian Armed Forces
