Goa Liberation Day 2024

Goa Liberation Day is celebrated annually on December 19. This day commemorates the liberation of Goa from Portuguese colonial rule in 1961.

History Goa was under Portuguese rule for 451 years. Despite India gaining independence in 1947, Goa remained a Portuguese colony.

Diplomatic efforts to secure Goa's independence failed, leading to Operation Vijay, a military campaign launched by India from December 17 to 19, 1961.

On December 19, 1961, the Portuguese Governor-General Vassalo e Silva surrendered, marking the liberation of Goa and Daman and Diu, thereby making them part of the Indian Union and granted full statehood in 1987.

Alfonso de Albuquerque (1509-1515): Role: Second Governor of Portuguese India. Achievements: Known as the "Founder of the Portuguese Empire in the East." He captured Goa in 1510 and expanded Portuguese influence in the region.
