Critically endangered whale species rebounds slightly

One of the world's rarest whale species has seen a slight population rebound, according to data released recently, though experts warn it remains at serious risk of extinction.

Species name: North Atlantic right whale.

Population Rebound: The population increased to 373 individuals in 2023, up from 358 individuals in 2020, representing a 4% increase.

Recent Low: The lowest recorded population was 358 individuals in 2020.

Primary Threats: 

Ship Collisions: Major cause of mortality for the species. 

Fishing Gear Entanglements: Leads to injuries and fatalities. 

Climate Change: Affects their primary food source, zooplankton.

The North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) is one of the world's most endangered whale species. The North Atlantic right whale is classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Habitat: They are typically found in the North Atlantic Ocean, particularly along the eastern coast of the United States and Canada.
