BMCs in all Gram Panchayats of Karnataka

Karnataka High Court issued a notice on December 12, 2024 regarding a Public Interest Litigation (PIL). The PIL seeks the formation of Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs) in all Gram Panchayats, taluks, and districts across Karnataka for biodiversity conservation.

Request: The petitioner requested the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj to constitute BMCs in every Gram Panchayat, taluk, and district, in compliance with Section 41 of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, and the amending Act 2023

Violation Alleged: The petitioner alleged that the absence of BMCs violates Section 41 of the Biological Diversity Act, 2002, which mandates their formation for biodiversity conservation.

Support and Oversight: State Biodiversity Boards (SBBs): Provide guidance and support to BMCs. National Biodiversity Authority (NBA): Oversees the functioning of BMCs at the national level.
