11.9k hectares around Bhimgad sanctuary notified as eco-sensitive zone

Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has notified an area of 11,900 hectares (308.22 square kilometers) around the Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary in Khanapur taluk of Belagavi district, Karnataka, as an Ecologically Sensitive Zone (ESZ).

This notification aims to protect the unique biodiversity and ecological balance of the region. The ESZ includes 14 villages, such as Chikale, Gavase, Chapoli, Kabanalli, Kongala, Nerse, Shiroli, Dongargoan, and Warkadpate, while Parwad, Kankumbi, Amgaon, Gawali, and Pastoli are partially included.

Flora and Fauna: Vegetation:

 Tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests. Notable Species: Wroughton's Free-tailed Bat (critically endangered), Velvet-fronted Nuthatch, Malabar Grey Hornbill, Elephants, Chitals, Spotted Deer, Sambar, Sloth Bear, Gaur, Leopards, Tigers.

Rivers: Mahadayi River:

 Originates in the Bhimgad forests with a cluster of 30 springs forming the river Mahadayi, which joins other streams and flows down to the Vajrapoha Falls.
